Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has met other world leaders to discuss climate change on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the Caribbean.

The issue of climate change is expected to dominate the three-day summit in Trinidad and Tobago.

The United Nations secretary-general, the French President and the Danish Prime Minister have joined 53 Commonwealth leaders to work on the issue ahead of next month's conference in Copenhagen.

The need to address a changing climate was a point the Queen reinforced at this morning's opening ceremony.

"The Commonwealth can be proud of the fact that in each of its six decades it has shaped the international response to emerging global challenges," she told the gathered leaders.

"And on this, the eve of the UN Copenhagen summit on climate change, the Commonwealth has an opportunity to lead once more."

Queen Elizabeth told the summit that many of those most vulnerable to the effects of climate change lived in Commonwealth countries.

"The threat to our environment is not a new concern but it is now a global challenge which will continue to affect the security and stability of millions for years to come," she said.

In his opening remarks, the Commonwealth's secretary-general, Kamalesh Sharma, warned of what he called the "looming existential catastrophe of climate change".

Mr Rudd has met with Denmark's Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen and attended a special session on the topic with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has proposed a $10-billion launch fund to help poorer countries adapt to climate change.
